The Veterinary Wound Library is a
resource for veterinary clinicians to trial
the most up-to-date products and
technologies in return for evaluation
of their practical application in the
veterinary patient.
Since 1961 and the efforts of George Winter and his 'moist wound healing' principles, human wound management has progressed considerably. However, veterinary application lags behind that of its human equivalent.
It could be suggested that the veterinary application is not greater because the veterinary wound-care market is of relatively small commercial value, and there is little incentive to dedicate techniques or research to establish veterinary applications.
A lack of species-specific evidence, supporting literature, basic technical guidance and limited exposure of the most up-to-date materials to veterinary practice, leaves an open and growing gap between the human and veterinary application of these modern methods. The profession may thus be losing out on any potential benefits that emerging technologies offer.
The Veterinary Wound Library has been developed with these challenges in mind and endeavours to provide a resource for veterinary clinicians to trial the most up-to-date products and technologies in return for evaluation of their practical application in the veterinary patient. The information and data gained will become part of the library database: designed specifically to help clinicians access species-specific case data and honest evaluations of products which may offer future value to veterinary wound management.
