Are some more equal than others?

Andrew Coe poses an ethical question that is a bit of a pain for caring professionals:

A few years ago at a conference I attended, the question was posed by a speaker as to whether pet animals had a greater 'right' to pain relief than farm animals. I was fairly clear in expressing my view that, yes they did, and I remember the look of shock/horror on the face of said speaker that anybody (much less a vet) could possibly hold such a view.
